The Great Wall of Chinais a series of China travel fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials, generally built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China in part to protect the Chinese Empire or its prototypical states against intrusions by various nomadic groups or military incursions by various warlike peoples or forces. Several walls were being built as early as the 7th century BC;these, later joined together and made bigger, stronger, and unified are now collectively referred to as the Great Wall. is far quieter than Badaling and the journey there goes through some beautiful countryside - as you get a little nearer to Mutianyu you start to see portions of the Great Wall as it climbs and threads it's way across the steep hills and mountains. Once at Mutianyu the first task is to actually get onto the Wall as the entrance to it is quite high up from the town - the option is to walk up or you can take the cable car which costs 80 Yuan return at time of writing - late 2011 - and is usually not included in the trip's price. There are two cable car routes up to the Wall, the northern one goes to Tower 14 and the southern one which has an option of returning by toboggan goes to Watch Tower 6.Lhasa Tours As mentioned when returning back down from the Wall from Watch Tower 6 you can opt to descend on a wheeled toboggan - the latter is quite popular and there are usually long queues of people wanting to return this way so remember to allow enough time in relation to your coach or bus departure time.
