Tomb of Hai Rui is situated in western outskirts of the Haikou City which is 5 kilometers from the civic center. It represents the esteem of people towards Hai Rui, an uncorrupted and upright official. It was originally built in the year 1589 during the Ming Dynasty and some of the construction of this tomb graden still remains intact. Covering an area of about 4000 square meters, this layout was desined according to the level of official titles at that time. At present, it is rated as the Key Cultural Relic Preservation of the Hainan Province (must-see .
Hai rui was born in Hainan Province and was an official in the Ming Dynasty. He is farmed as the statesman for his performance and honesty of his duty as well as his very clean life. People chose this location after his death in obedience to his spirit from the Heaven.
There is one story illustrating his honesty. After seeing emperor wink at corruption of court officials, he had prepared a coffin for his death and also said farewell to his wife. Then he went to the emperor to express his advice and criticism. His words were not accepted and cost him his court position. He was also sent to jail. When he was released, he returned to his hometown helping with the irrigation project. He was again employed by the court at the age of 72 by the court for working in Nanjing (the famous travel city along Yangtze River where you can have Yangtze River tour) and passed away in his third year of service.
His integrity has gained the recognition among people. When he worked for the court, he could not pay for servants and was needy. He wrote inscriptions and articles for others for earning money. This was very uncommon as in the Chinese feudal society, most of the officials have servants and they lived a very rich life.
On the day of burial of Hai Rui all admired official and other people attended the funeral, grieving and crying. The coffin was then carried to the spot where the present tomb is situated. The rope of the coffin broke and it was believed by the people that this was the place where Hai Rui chose for himself and the tomb was built on that place.
